Musculoskeletal Ultrasound
Musculoskeletal ultrasound ( MSK) is a dynamic, non-invasive exam that is used to evaluate for changes in joints, tendons, bursa, soft tissue, and bone that often cannot be identified on standard X-rays. Ultrasound studies can often help to distinguish between inflammatory vs. degenerative arthritis and micro-crystalline diseases, including gout and pseudogout.
Ultrasound can occasionally assist in staging the severity of rheumatoid arthritis, monitor treatment response and exclude arthritis in patients with tender joints from non-inflammatory conditions such as fibromyalgia. In some cases, ultrasound can provide detailed information that would otherwise require imaging with MRI or CT scan, thus avoiding exposure to radiation. Because we offer ultrasound imaging at both locations, testing can often be done on the same day of your visit to allow for more convenient and efficient care.
